Baby anoa born

Meet Maya: Our New Baby Lowland Anoa!

We are thrilled to introduce the newest addition to our West Midlands Safari Park family—a baby lowland anoa calf named Maya (pronounced my-a)! She was born on 15th July to parents Sonia and Tyson.

Maya’s arrival is particularly special, as lowland anoa are classified as endangered in the wild. Her birth is a significant milestone not just for our Park, but for the conservation of this rare species. Lowland anoa face numerous threats, including hunting and habitat loss, which have severely impacted their numbers. With relatively few anoa in zoos worldwide and even fewer births in managed care, Maya's birth is incredibly special.

Maya’s parents are doing a fantastic job of raising her, with Sonia being especially attentive and nurturing. Maya also has a big brother, Luca, who was born last year.

At West Midlands Safari Park, we’re committed to the conservation of lowland anoa. In addition to celebrating Maya's birth, we are actively involved in research projects aimed at better understanding anoa reproductive physiology. We also support conservation programmes in the wild, working to protect anoa in their natural habitats.
